How to Collect Vintage Labels

A few field notes gathered over decades of buying, trading and preserving fruit crate labels.

Know the Origin

A label's value is tied to its growing region, packing house and era. Research the imprint before you buy.

Mind the Condition

Look for bright color, intact corners and minimal foxing. Original gloss is a strong sign of an unused label.

Spot Reproductions

Modern reprints often feel too smooth and lack the slight texture of old lithograph stock. Read the fine print.

Store Them Flat

Keep labels flat in acid-free sleeves, away from sunlight and humidity, to prevent fading and curling.

Collect a Theme

Focus a collection around a fruit, a region, or an art style. A focused set is more rewarding and more valuable.
